The Best Dressed Men Of The Oscars

The Oscars has long been a night of glittering gongs and noteworthy get-ups. While The 89th edition might have been slightly overshadowed by the Academy’s biggest gaffe since Leo lost for Titanic, a few of the fellas on the red carpet still managed to keep our attention. So as Hollywood’s elite nurse their hangovers stateside, we’ve charted the golden boys of the evening – and we promise there are no mix-ups.

Andrew Garfield

Poor Andrew Garfield had to deal with losing out on Best Actor as well as watching his ex-girlfriend Emma Stone pick up Best Actress, so fair play to him for at least winning with this 101 masterclass in black tie. Modernising the traditional get-up, this look gains full marks for an immaculate fit, with extra credit for its contrasting pocket square, on-trend oversized lapels and slip-on patent dress shoes.

Dev Patel

Another Best Actor nominee, Dev Patel’s white dinner jacket is the ideal in-between for black tie. The colour provides a change of scenery from usual clobber, it sits comfortably within the dress code and the shade perfectly compliments darker skin tones. No wonder the Lion star is smiling despite being empty-handed.

Riz Ahmed

He might not have been nominated this year, but Riz Ahmed takes home the prize for most interesting look on the red carpet. Though the decision to give monochrome a miss is a risky one, a safe colour choice breaks the red carpet mould without raising eyebrows; plus it’s Ermenegildo Zegna, and you can’t go wrong with Zegna.

Jeff Bridges

Proving wisdom really does come with age, Best Supporting Actor nominee Jeff Bridges hits the age-appropriate mark without sacrificing any of his personal style. It’s all thanks to a classic three-piece: the jacket and trousers are classic anchors, while the waistcoat creates a powerful V at the chest for a flattering look. He’s definitely still got it.

Mahershala Ali

Despite his victory in the Best Supporting Actor category, Mahershala Ali’s all-black ensemble is the real victor here. The sleek dinner suit chimes with a tonal shirt and bow tie, but still manages to avoid looking boring with a patterned pocket square.

Ryan Gosling

On anyone else, Ryan’s ruffles might veer into fancy dress territory, but Gosling makes this ode to the seventies work. Despite being more Funkytown than Tinseltown, the shirt sits on the right side of statement when framed by a classic Gucci suit. Finally, definitive proof that The Gos can wear pretty much anything he wants and look good.

Damien Chazelle

The brains behind La La Land, Damien Chazelle is the youngest ever recipient of the Best Director gong. The 32-year-old’s risk-taking attitude to filmmaking also appears to have spilt over into his wardrobe via a blue dinner suit worn with both white and ivory trimmings. The gamble pays off thanks to a perfect fit and the sheer confidence of someone who knows they’re nailing it.

Josh Dallas

Josh Dallas might be a red carpet rookie, but the Once Upon A Time actor has been popping up more frequently on our radar lately, and looks of this calibre are precisely why. If his muted velvet jacket, razor-sharp lapels and earth-tone pocket square are anything to go by, Dallas really is Prince Charming.
