The abandoned London Underground station that’s morphed into the Northern line

Whilst commuting through the Northern line you may be unaware that you might have travelled through an abandoned station.

City Road Tube station opened in 1901. However, due to its low usage, it was closed in 1922.

This was after the closure of the City & South London Railway’s northern section between Euston and Moorgate Street, which was closed so there could be an increase in the diameter of the tunnels, enabling the larger trains to operate.

Despite City Road’s closure in 1922, suggestions for it to close began in 1908, which was less than seven years after its opening.

Located near Old Street and Angel, the abandoned station was situated in Islington.

Although the platforms were eventually removed and the lift shaft was used as a ventilation shaft, City Road was never reconstructed. It even ended up being used as an air-raid shelter during the second World War.

The 1960s was when the City Road’s structure that surrounded the original lift shaft was destroyed and after the war, the temporary structures for air-raid shelter were removed.

In 2015, permission was granted to destroy the station’s remaining structure for the second phase of Islington Council’s scheme so heating could be provided for King Square council estate.

In 2020, the station’s site was used for the opening of the Bunhill 2 Energy Centre, which provides heating to more buildings by capturing the waste heat from Northern Line tunnels.
