The partner of a man killed on e-scooter in West London thinks they should be legal.

Tony Mumford, 53, was on his way home from his shoe repair business in Twickenham when he fell from the e-scooter on July 15 in Heath Road.

He suffered a head injury and was in a coma before his life support was switched off a week later.

His partner Cheryl Evans bought him the scooter for his birthday in May to help him to get to work at Toe-Knees Shoe Repairs more easily.

Ms Evans told the BBC said that since rental e-scooters could now be hired, then “privately owned scooters should be legalised” but added that helmets should be worn.

“You should always wear proper trousers, proper shoes… and a helmet to protect your brain because they do go at quite a speed,” she said.

It is currently only legal to use rental e-scooters in London in certain parts of the capital as part of a trial.

Privately owned e-scooters should only be used on private land and not on public roads, cycle lanes or pavements.

Mr Mumford leaves two daughters and three stepsons, whom Ms Evans, 49, said were “devastated”.

She added: “He was a loving family man with the biggest heart ever. In the shop he would fix people’s shoes for nothing if they didn’t have the money, that’s the sort of man he was.

“He never thought of himself but put others first.

“We had fun while it lasted… I just wish I had him longer so we could have grown old together.”
