London Underground station transformed into green odyssey in homage to Sir David Attenborough

If you take a Victoria line train southbound one stop from Oxford Circus, you’ll now arrive at ‘Green Planet’. Gone are the classic London Underground red and blue roundels, new special green signage and an array of imagery of all things plants and the natural world now greets passengers at Green Park.

It’s all in homage to Sir David Attenborough and his new five part BBC series ‘The Green Planet’ which started last night (December 9) on BBC One and iPlayer. On the platforms, two digital screens show waiting passengers trailers from the show and plants which are highlighted in the series are captured in dramatic imagery around the station.

The station’s striking green appeal is temporary, but fits in nicely with its verdant Royal Parks surroundings at Green Park.

‘Green Planet’ station is part of a wider campaign called ‘Welcome to Their World’ curated by BBC Creative.

Stuart Gittings, creative lead, says: “Our goal for ‘Welcome to Their World’ was to showcase the series’ most otherworldly plantlife in the most immersive way possible, so taking over a piece of London’s iconic Underground presented an unmissable opportunity to bring our audience into their world.”

This is not the first time a London Underground station has been rebaptised in association with a new TV offering. Nearby Piccadilly Circus was renamed ‘Picardilly Circus’ as part of a deal with Amazon Prime to kick off its new Star Trek: Picard series in 2020.

These campaigns also bring in desperately needed extra revenue for Transport for London, which faces the prospect of a £1.9billion funding gap amid suppressed passenger numbers due to the Covid pademic and people continuing to work from home. The exact income from the temporary rebaptism is undisclosed as a commercial deal.

The Jubilee and Piccadilly lines platforms remain in their classic TfL decor and there is no change to the station’s operations.

Caught a Tube to ‘Green Planet’ yet? What did you make of it? Tell us in the comments below!
