BBC Animal Park: How loss of dad and father-in-law within a month of each other made Kate Humble ditch London life for rural Wales

Kate Humble has graced our screens this year as the much-loved presenter of BBC’s Animal Park.

Kate currently resides in the countryside after moving there from London, but what many don’t know is that the move was borne out of the grief of losing two of her loved ones in a matter of weeks.

In 2019, the Countryfile star lost both her dad and her father-in-law within the same month, the Mirror reports, but she has said that being in the countryside helps her deal with her grief.

Kate said in an interview with Saga that her experience of grief is an ongoing battle, but that moving to the countryside allowed her to work through her grieving in “solitude”.

“Being on my own and being in the countryside, it doesn’t matter that I’m wailing – and it has really helped,” she explained.

“In that time, I’m not lonely. I have this luxury of solitude and time just to remember. The lovely thing about walking is I can spend that time with my dad.”

She explained that sometimes when she is “on her own walking“, the pain is too much to bear, leaving her “doubled over” in pain.

The 52-year-old added that it is an ongoing process. She said: “Dealing with grief is a strange thing – it takes you on a journey, it doesn’t just start then end.

“Some days are better than others. So giving myself that headspace was incredibly healing.”

The TV star also shared some sweet memories of her dad from her childhood, saying that he was “incredibly hard-working, stubborn, very principled and hot tempered”.

She noted: “We’d argue because of our similar temperament, but I did, and still do, worship my dad.”

The BBC presenter was born and raised in London, but has travelled around the world since she left school, including in Africa and South America.

She describes her mum as the “peacekeeper” and the “anchor” of the family in her childhood home.

Of having children herself, she said: “I know motherhood was not for me and, literally, it bypassed me. Not being a mum has never been an issue.”

She added that losing her dad and father-in-law was a “stark reminder that you only get one shot at life.”
